A system of meaning is a set of relationships between one group of variables (such as words, or physical symbols) and the meanings which are attached to them. Because meaning systems involve relationships which are not often essential or universal, different human societies will often agree on different relation ships and meanings. Systems of meanings are not something that every child is born with, it is taught. This means that if learning is an essential characteristic of culture then teaching is just as crucial. Because systems of meanings are native to certain regions the common practices performed may differ from your own. So if you are traveling to different nations and countries study up to be polite.
