A tenet is any belief, opinion, principle, or dogma that is held as true by the members of a group.

The basic tenets of the modern west, also known as Mesopotamia, are its possessive individualism, scientific utility, and free market philosophy.

Possessive individualism is a theory founded by Crawford Macpherson, a political scientist.  His theory states that each individual possesses his or her skills and traits and owes nothing to society for them.

The scientific unity, or unity of science, is a theory that simply states that all the sciences together form a unified whole.  This means that even though it may not seem like the different branches of science relate, together they form all the different aspects of the Earth, and we as humans would be lost without them.

A free market is a market in which the rates and prices are controlled solely by the sellers and consumers, kind of like supply and demand.  In a free market, government has no control over anything, and can not intervene.  The opposite of a free market is a controlled market.
