"Many scientists call the first modern humans to reach Europe from Africa the Aurignacians" (manual pg 31). The Aurignacians lived during the Upper Paleolithic era around 45000-32000 Y.A.. They resided mostly in Europe. They Aurignacians were nomadic hunters that lived on the glacier border lands (In class video). "Aurignacian culture, toolmaking industry and artistic tradition of Upper Paleolithic Europe that followed the Mousterian industry, was contemporary with the Perigordian, and was succeeded by the Solutrean. The Aurignacian culture was marked by a great diversification and specialization of tools, including the invention of the burin, or engraving tool, that made much of the art possible.

The Aurignacians were very intelligent tool makers considering their time period. Aurignacians refined blade making with astonishing results. They were the first to make tools in order to make a tool. These tools now became commonplace as artisans devised the technique of annealing, which involved making flint more workable by heating it up, perhaps in warm sand. They made many types of tools such as: burins, scrapers, engraving tools, bladeds, points, spears, and knifes. They were the first to make  serrated (with jagged edges) tools and tools made of bone, antler, or ivory. Aurignacians also made tools by striking pieces off raw flint cores, a technique that can be duplicated by refitting, in effect running the process backwards.

The Aurignacians were mainly known for their cave art. They were the source of the earliest cave art.Cave art was produced almost exclusively in western Europe, where, by the end of the Aurignacian Period, hundreds of paintings, engravings, and reliefs had been executed on the walls, the ceilings, and sometimes the floors of limestone caves.

They also made pendants, beads, necklaces, and figurines. the figurines were mostly of  women or animals. The female statuettes had distinctive characteristics such as: exaggerated hips and breast and they had no head.

The Aurignacians were also the first to invent musical instruments.
