The Gravettians lived during the Upper Paleolithic era around 28-22 K.Y.A. in Southeast Europe. They were, like most of the other cultures, nomadic hunters that lived on the glacier borderlands during the ice age. The gravettians were like an upgraded version of the Aurignatians. They had interbred with the Aurignatians, made more advanced tools, and more advanced art.

The Gravettians were intelligent tool makers. They were the first to use and make nets. Nets were really helpful because it expanded their diets by making it easier to catch birds and fish. The Gravettians also made small pointed backed blades used for big game hunting.Burins were  also important tools used.

The Gravettians liked to make figurines. They were the first hominids to make things out of hardened (previously molded) clay. The Gravettian Figurines like the Aurignatian figurines have exaggerated hips and breast; but unlike the Aurignatian figurines the Gravettian figures have heads. One well known figures is called the Venus of Willendorf.
