The Mother Goddess, a term pertaining to fertility and motherhood, was an element often used in Gravettian Sculpture. One may argue that they are the first evolved religious figures in art. The Mother Goddess figures utilized by the Gravettians were an innovation in culture itself.

The Mother Goddess, a term pertaining to fertility and motherhood, was an element often used in Gravettian Sculpture. One may observe that the Gravettians conveyed the maternal and feminine aspects of the Mother Goddess by sculpting large hips and breast. One may argue that they are the first evolved religious figures in art because the Mother Goddess figures were portrayed as deities of fertility, nurturing, creativity, and much more. As a matter of fact, the first ceramic figure discovered was a Mother Goddess figure, the Venus of Dolni Vestonice, of the Gravettian era found in Moravia. The Mother Goddess figures utilized by the Gravettians were an innovation in culture itself because they demonstrated how adept the Gravettians were at sculpting and connecting ideas. Not only is the Mother Goddess figure implemented in Gravettian culture, but continues to be utilized in modern culture with the Virgin Mary and many more figures. However, Gravettian Mother Goddess Figures have earned the title of "Venus" in our current culture.
