| − | Ay was a Pharaoh in the Eighteenth Dynasty of the New Kingdom of Egypt. He may have started in the army and rose through the ranks. He is thought to be of common birth, and had to marry Ankhesenamun to assume power. He ruled for four years around 1323 BC, but his main position was as a vizier for King Tut, where some believe he held nearly all the power. There is a theory in which he murdered King Tut to gain power, but there is little evidence to support it.
