The process of knapping is making a stone tool using another stone, bone, or other cutting tool. The cutting tool causes the initial stone to fracture into pieces called flakes. The smaller flakes are taken off the larger flakes. Knappers were the makers of these tools. In hunter-gatherer societies, flint was often used.
