His parentage is completely unknown, suggesting that he too was born a commoner.  He was originally a military leader, but rose to help Ay to advise King Tut when he was the King Deputy.  In the reign of Akhenaten, he became Great Commander of the Army.  After Ay's death he declared himself king of Egypt in 1321 BC, marrying Mutnodjmet, a female royal, to secure his position.  He continued to bring back the old gods and traditions, rebuilding temples to gods such as Amun.  He died in 1292 BC and had a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor.
