Nefertari was a Great Royal Wife of Rameses II, also known as Rameses the Great, during the 19th dynasty. We do not know who her parents were, but she may have been the daughter of a noble and must have married Rameses II before he ascended the throne. She bore him at least six children, possibly more, but none of them outlived their father and so none of them succeeded the throne. We have some evidence that although Rameses II and Nefertari were most likely married for political reasons, Rameses II actually did love Nefertari. He had two temples built at Abu-Simbel, one for him, the other dedicated to Nefertari, and their statues, interestingly, are of the same height. Also, on the walls of her burial chamber are some lines of poetry from Rameses II expressing his love for her. She was granted a magnificent tomb in the Valley of Queens, but most of the gold and treasures, including her mummy and sarcophagus, were stolen by tomb robbers. However, the wall art remains relatively intact, and we get a lot of insight into Egyptian life and death rituals. She was also deified as a goddess while she was still alive.
