The new genus is Homo. According to the video Becoming Human, Bipedalism was the initial feature that set us apart from the apes, but it was not until much later that would set our own genus Homo apart from the Australopithecines (1). Homo is a genus that has been around for an estimated time of 1.5 and 2.5 million years old, and is the genus that include modern humans and their close relatives.(2) The latest specie from the homo genus who were recently extinct are the Homo Floresiensis that were estimated to have died out 12,000 years ago.
