In ancient Egypt there were two different categories of temples, Cultus Temples and Mortuary Temples

Cultus Temples
These temples were made for the worship of one specific God. An example of this kind of temple would be the Temple of Horus and the Temple of Isis. Two types of ceremonies would be held at these temples. One was a daily ceremony of giving offerings to the gods. The other type of ceremony were special festivals that would happen at different times of the year.
Mortuary Temples
These temples were built for the worship of a deceased pharaoh. An example of this temple is the temple of Ramses II.
Temples in general
Temples in Egypt reflected the original "Island of Creation". The pillars of most temples were made to look like palm trees, reeds, and papyrus, all of which were believed to be on the "island of creation". These Temples were the place where people could connect with their gods.
