Homo Habilis went extinct because over the course of a million years, they did not change or modify their technology (such as handaxes). Also, their brains did not adapt and evolve to their environment, furthering the extent of their demise. Species who change their technology and make their technology better are better equipped to survive in their environment. Also, Homo erectus out-competed Homo habilis on every level.
