The Sumerian religion revolved completely around the natural environment. For instance, the seven Sumerian Gods (the god of fresh water, the god of salt water, the god of wind, the god of earth, the god of sky, the god of the sun, and the god of the moon) each come from a certain part of nature. Shrines for certain gods were considered to be one of the highlights of a Sumerian city. Sumerian religion began by citizens worshipping the forces of nature themselves, but as time passed by, human form was associated with these forces. These people used their "being" a human form of an element of nature as a legitimation of authority.
