The end of the Old Kingdom's collapse, which lasted from 2700-2100 BCE, and is responsible for the great pyramids, collapsed at the end of Pepi II's reign. The Nile did not replenish soil resources during the age, and around 2200-2100 BCE a dry period caused half a century of famine, much like the one in Mesopotamia in the same time. As Pepi grew older and more powerful he in turn grew less able to run Egypt. Internecine warfare between the capital of Herakleopolis and the Theban kings also stressed the Old Kingdom's power.
