As opposed to the soft soil of their old home, the "long house people" came to live in a dense forest area with hard soil that was difficult to work with.  This soil was make to keep tree roots in place as opposed to being easily used to plant with.  They invented the plough to cut through and turn over the soil with more ease than before.  This tool enabled more seeds to be planted in a shorter period of time which in turn created a more prosperous garden.
