The first human farmers learned to harvest, domesticate, and cultivate barley, wheat, and millet.  As these grains did not spoil, there were many advantages of cultivating them.  However, these grains only provided 2 of the 12 amino required by humans for survival and reproduction.  Therefore, farmers needed a way to provide for the other 10.  In the near east the answer was provided by the animals they domesticated, and the got protein from meat and milk products.  Lentils, dried peas, and garbanzos were later added to the farmers' protein diet.

At about 7000 BCE, a group known as the Ghassoulians began harvesting olives, dates and figs.  These foods would later serve as the main protein source for the Greeks and Babylonians.
