Atman, in Hindu, literally means inner-self. Atman is also the first principle of Hinduism. Atman is thought to be the principle of the mind and the life principle of the universe. Atman refers to the non-material self which never changes. Atman is the individual spirit. While its counterpart, Brahman, is all of the souls. So, one could say that if Brahman is an ocean, Atman is a water molecule. All Atman has Brahman inside it.
Atman means "self" in Sanskrit.

It is important because without knowledge of ones atman one cannot achieve moksha, the liberation from samsara, the cycle of reincarnation.
