Agriculturalist societies were very successful and prosperous, but since they were predominantly farmers they could not defend themselves well.

To help defend their town and resources they started building walls and barriers around their towns. As well as the arising of a new specialization,

the specialization of soldiers, to defend the towns, or just the rich, or to attack others for their riches. Like with the Great Wall of China,

it was built to ward off attackers from the north, and protect China from others that wanted their land, riches etc.
