After previously being nomadic, people had to learn to get rid of carcasses, excrement, and other kinds of waste.  The first towns were densely packed, had animals and humans in close quarters together, had little to no organization, and had no method of ridding town streets with waste.  Due to these conditions, many new diseases sprouted up, killing off a large portion of the newly-sedentary groups.
