Line 1: Line 1:
The Egyptians and the Hittites had a very complex relationship. For starters, they were neighbors, and relied on each other for resources that weren't available in their own kingdoms. However, they were also looking for chinks in each other's armor in order to invade and seize control of their farmland and other possessions. While both sides maintained a fake and mutually beneficial relationship at first, over time it deteriorated to just the necessary formalities, shown by Mugallu pretending to kiss the Pharaohs feet.

However, the feud did not solely exist in fiction. The two nations clashed in the Battle of Qadesh around 1274-1273 BCE, lead by Ramses II of Egypt and King Muwatalli of the Hittites. Both sides declared they had won a decisive victory, directly contradicting the other nation's account. Now their claim is thought of as a propoganda technique to rally the people around their superior nation and government, in an attempt to strengthen their hold and increase order within society and the empire.

The Egyptians view the Hittites as a dangerous nation, one that would stab you in the back as soon as trade their precious metals. They also believe that the Hittites "[go] into battle grinning... as if they found slashed bellies with entrails spilling out to be the most amusing of sights."(73) In addition, the Egyptians regard the Hittites as disrespectful, insolent, and incompetent disbelievers, since they don't show the deference towards Pharaoh that the Egyptians think he deserves. As a result, Mugallu is called out and cast from court, offending him and the Hittites.

According to Mugallu, "The Nile spoils [the] Egyptians. [They're] complacent, pampered by its abundance... Soft."(75) This statement shows that the Hittites view the Egyptians as too reliant on the Nile, not strong or powerful enough as a nation in order to hold any real authority. In addition, his challenge of "...do you think, even with all your skill at spying and plotting, that you and General Horemheb and the rest can hold Egypt together long enough for your boy-king to grow up?"(76) shows that the Hittites do not believe in the Egyptian gods and their religion, making the Pharaoh not an all-powerful god-on-earth, but more of a child trying to keep up a ridiculous act that fools nobody.
