Except in the delta, desert lands often stretched away from both sides of the river for tens or hundreds of miles. This was actually a big help to the leaders of ancient Egypt. Why might that have been so?
The great expanse of desert surrounding Egypt would have helped the rulers of Egypt maintain control because the harsh, barren climate would have provided a natural barrier, defending Egypt from attacks. This, coupled with the Egyptians agricultural success, allowed for a unique cultural purity.
