Basics of Hammurabi's Code
The Code was written around 1700 BC by King Hammurabi of Babylon, and it is one of the earliest sets of laws. Hammurabi wrote the code to please the gods. The laws were carved on an eight foot high piece of black diorite. The punishments became more severe, where the "eye for an eye" system was created. There are 282 laws dealing with theft, property damage, women's, marriage, children's, and slaves' rights, murder, death, and injury.
