According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, and herbivore is an "animal adapted to subsist solely on plant tissues. The herbivores range from insects (such as aphids) to large mammals (such as elephants)." The Austrolopithecus Africanus was a herbivore. They specialized in the consumption of the grasses that grew on the African savanna, and because of this specialization they were not able to adapt as the climate changed and competition increased.
