Mencius, or Meng Zi, (lived 372-289 B.C.) was a Confucian disciple who made great contributions to Confucianism and its theories and ideas. He stated that man was by nature good, even though this is contradicted by most; who think humans were born guilty and have to be taught good. He established the idea that a ruler should govern the people with kindness and fairness and ethical behavior. He synthesized Confucian thought to provide the Chinese society with a basis of framework on which to found almost every aspect of life. He affected society in the way that he established these rules for people to follow, which appealed to the population and continued, which eventually led to an orderly and very equal society. His rules led the rulers to be good to the people, which in exchange gave peace, so the country was placid and never rebellious. This plan, following Confucian ideas, worked very well. I used page 119 in the Manual to get my information on Meng Zi, and additional information can be found on his other achievements other than balancing society throughout the next three pages or so. ~Stefania A.
