Bit
A bit is short for a binary digit and can either be called a nit or a nat. A "byte" is composed of 8 consecutive bits, and a "word" is composed of 16 bits. A bit takes the value of 0 or 1 and is the smallest unit of measurement in the computer. Binary digits/bits are a basic unit of information storage and communication in digital computing and digital information theory. A computer is sometimes classified by the amount of bits or bytes it can hold, usually in megabytes or gigabytes, and in some cases, terabytes.
