History 8 India Ancient India Workbook

20. As these photos show, even today life in much of India is not that different from what it was like at the time of the Aryans. How do these photos help to show that? What, if anything, about them appears more modern? What seems traditional and likely to have been found in Indian villages centuries ago?

These photos show that even though centuries have passed since the time of the Aryans, some of India's traditions still stay the same. These photos help to show that by capturing an image of modern India that would also likely be found in older India. For the most part, these photos depict a near exact image of ancient India. the only clues that we have to prove that these photos are indeed more modern is little details like the cows' collars or the resolution and quality of the picture. It is very likely that these scenes (the farmer feeding milk cattle and the dung drying on the facade of a brick wall) would be found in ancient India. Both of these things would have occurred in ancient India, and they both are lasting traditions that have made it all the way to this present time period.

21. The cow is special in India. As one writer puts it, Indian scriptures tell us that the cow is a gift of the gods to the human race....It follows that the cow represents the Divine Mother that sustains all human beings and brings them up as her very own offspring. Why might such a view have appealed to millions in the rural villages of ancient Hindu India?

This idea that cows are representations of the divine mother may have possibly had to do with the fact that the towns and people owning cows usually did not have very much and cows provided a lot of things. They provided milk, cheese, manure, dung bricks, and many more things. Cows were important in the past and will remain a great symbol of India for many years in the future.
