According to the book Eater of Souls, one's ka is their "spiritual doppelganger" that contains their deepest secrets, darkest thoughts, and personal experiences. The ka is the difference between life and death, because the ka leaves your body after you die. The Egyptians believed that you were given a ka by Heket or Meskhenet and that it gave you the energy to live. They believed that humans needed food and drink, because your ka needed some form of sustenance. It was also believed that the ka needed sustenance after death, which was the reason for sacrificial food offerings.
