History of the Sphinx

His mystery has surrounded the unfortunately misshapen face of the Sphinx. It is missing its nose and beard. These features were the victims of Turkish target practice during the Turkish period. Some think they were shot off by Napoleon and his men, but the drawings show that these features were gone long before Napoleon's time.

Because of the changing desert terrain and ancient age, the Sphinx has been buried several times. It had to undergo major restoration of the two back paws, done soley by the Egyptians themselves.
