Sun Zi's Art of War was the earliest recorded treatise of war.  It goes over what Sun Zi believed to be what generals and leaders should do during war situations, and how that would affect the outcome.  It went over things like not having long wars, and the cost of war.  A translated version of the treatise can be found here: http://www.chinapage.com/sunzi-e.html
