Sakk - Banks of the Abbasid period conducted business on a larger scale than predecessors. Sakk (the root of the modern word check) were letters of credit that many branches of banks in this time period used. Merchants could draw sakk in one city and cash them in another, becoming able to settle accounts with distant business partners without having to deal in cash. (Traditions and Encounters, p.362)
