Describe the achievements and shortcomings of the Song Dynasty.

The first emperor of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 C.E.) was Song Taizu (960-976 C.E.). During his ruling, he persuaded his generals to retire so they wouldn't try to usurp his throne, provided more opportunities for his people to take the exams and get jobs, and paid "all" his government officials handsomely in exchange for their loyalty. Although these things were supposed to help the empire, it eventually led to its demise. The empire produced very few military commanders, and as a result the scholar-bureaucrats became the military leaders, people with very little knowledge of military and warfare. The Khitan were a group of nomadic people who ruled a vast empire from Korea to Mongolia; they demanded tribute from the Song Dynasty and in return they didn't attack them. However, the Jurchen eventually took over the Khitan and weren't as kind to the Song Dynasty, forcing them into the southern half of their empire.
