As shown in Egyptian art and manuscripts from the time, women in Egypt were, in theory, treated the same as men.  They had the same legal rights as men and could own property which included land, slaves, portable goods, servants, livestock, and money.  However, in the book when Bener wanted to know more about what was going on with their father, Kysen tells her to "stop interfering" because the "affairs are not in a women's domain" (46).  He then tells her that "women manage households and bear children" and "do not concern themselves with the tasks of men" (46) which suggests that women were viewed as less capable then men.
