In the Ramayana, Prince Bharata was the brother of Prince Rama, the central character of the Ramayana. Rama and Bharata's stepmother wanted Bharata to rule when his father retired, even though Rama was older and therefore had the right to the throne. The stepmother banished Rama, who, because he followed the rules of dharma, obeyed and left. However, Bharata,who also lived by dharma, refused to rule when Rama should have. Rama refuses, so Bharata proposes that after fourteen years of banishment, Rama should come back. Fourteen years pass, and when Rama comes back, Bharata gladly hands over the kingdom. He is a strong example of someone living by dharma.
