Hatusilis became the first king of the Hittite Empire after seizing the throne by force and uniting the city-states. As the king, he moved the capital of his empire to Hattusha. A self-proclaimed "lion," Hattusilis quickly attacked and conquered many of his neighbors, creating a superhuman image around himself. Although he portrayed himself as a brutul warrior, the image of himself that Hattusilis gives to his people is very different from what he really was. Even though he was a conquerer, Hatusilis also created one of the oldest and largest libraries we know today. With over 35,000 tablets Hattusilis' library is one of our main sources of knowledge on Hittite laws, culture, and rituals. In the last year of Hatusilis' recorded rule, the Hittites came in conflict with the Hurrian armies from North Syria and forces from Aleppo. He named is successor after he was badly wounded in a conflict with Aleppo.
