History 8 Agriculture Vocabulary

Neolithic means "of or relating to the latest period of the Stone Age characterized by polished stone implements" (1). The word is made of two parts: neo-, which means new, and -lithic, which means stone. The word is most often used when describing the Neolithic Period or the Neolithic Revolution. The Neolithic Period was the "final stage of cultural evolution or technological development among prehistoric humans" (2). The period is characterized by its peoples' dependence on domesticated plants and/or animals such as goats and wheat, settlement in permanent villages, and creation of pottery and weaving (2). The Neolithic Revolution, also known as the Domestication Revolution, is "the term used to describe the transition from nomadic hunting and gathering societies to settled agrarian societies" (3). During the Revolution, animals and plants were domesticated, making human lives much easier. As one would expect, the Neolithic Revolution took place during the Neolithic Period.
