Turner's theory states that geography determines history. For the Assyrians, one of the first inhabitants of Mesopotamia, geography played a key role in their history and culture. The geographic heart or center of Assyria was located in the north Tigris highlands. The Assyrians, being boxed in my cities from every direction, were often the targets of invasions. Later the Assyrians sought security and migrated to the Hakkari mountains for natural protection. The Assyrians lived in small villages along the Great Zab River, in the Sapna Valley, as well as along the shores of Lake Urmia until the 20th century. In this fertile environment, they created irrigation architecture. The constant attacks on them led to group solidarity and support. The placement of the Assyrians led to many cultural and physical advancements.
