The introduction of the horse provided a means of transportation that in effect increased trade between civilizations, lessened the time and effort required to plow fields, and an advantage in war. Horses also majorly affected social organization. Unfortunately, not only the horse but the maintenance required for the horse cost a household a lot. Horses took up a lot of food, just about as much as four people. They also needed some place to store the horse. As you can easily see, only the well to do families could afford a horse, elevating their status in society, quite literally, for seeing a person towering over you on a horse can be quite intimidating.
