11. What happens to a soul after death?
Back to Eater of Souls
In ancient Egypt souls were judged in front of the god of death and afterlife, Osiris. The heart of the deceased was measured against the feather of truth. If the heart was lighter than the feather of truth, than the desceased person was allowed to live in the afterlife. If the persons heart was heavier than the feather of truth, the soul would cease to exist and the soul and body would be eaten by the eater of souls.
This is explained further in chapter 7 in Eater of Souls. when Kysen is informing Tcha about the ritual. "'The dead found unworthy of the afterlife,' Kysen replied. He continued reluctantly. 'she eats the living soul, the body, all. One dies again, for all time. One ceases to exist'" (105)
