An interregnum is a period of time when a government is suspended, normally between successive reigns or regimes. For example, when the Old Kingdom of Egypt fell in around 2100 BC, the interregnum would be the gap of time before the Middle Kingdom was formed in around 1991 BC (109 year interregnum). The same applies between the fall of the Middle Kingdom (1786 BC), which was the age of stability, and the rise of the New Kingdom (1587 BC), which was the prosperous and expansive golden age.
