Return to History 8 Human Origins Vocabulary

Panting is a method of cooling used by other carnivores in our world. Panting is only effective after short bursts of exertion. Over the length of time that scavenging hominids might need to chase a large animal until it collapsed, panting would have led our ancestors to dangerous hyperventilation. This is why humans and our ancestors use sweating because it is more effective for our lifestyle and the way we live. Panting helps animals like dogs, cats, or birds get rid of excess heat because they do not have sweat glands.
