History 8 Mesopotamia Manual Concepts The new laws of Babylon dealt with crimes no one had ever dealt with before: crimes against the state. They allowed the government to become more involved in the catching and punishing of criminals. The punishments for crime were very severe. It was in Babylon that "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth", known as the law of Talon, originated.
