History 8 Agriculture Vocabulary

For most, the word Jericho brings about images of a huge, walled city that was conquered by Joshua and his men during their conquest of Canaan (1). However, despite this religious significance, Jericho also has its fair share of historical significance. By about 7000 BC, humans had begun to shift from the hunter-gatherer lifestyle into the lifestyle of depending on cultivated crops and domesticated animals (2) (aka farming). These humans’ tools and skills had advanced greatly. So much so that people lived in very large settlements with populations of over a thousand (2). The prime example of these settlements in Jericho, which is in the valley of the Jordan River and Catal Huyuk in present-day Turkey (2).
