Return to History 8 Near East Vocabulary

King Solomon's father was King David and his mother was named Bathsheba. His rule began in approximately 967 BC. Solomon was not the oldest son of David's, but King David had promised his wife, Bathsheba that Solomon would be the next king. During Solomon's rule, his empire extended from the Euphrates River to South Egypt. King Solomon was known for his writing, wealth, wisdom, and his many building projects, his crowning achievement being the Holy temple in Jerusalem. The Holy Temple was made of wood, stone, and overlaid with gold. It took seven years for slave laborers from the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites to build the Holy Temple. Once the Holy Temple was done, King Solomon dedicated it through a public ceremony of prayers and sacrifices. Finally after 40 years of ruling, King Solomon passed and was succeeded by his son Rehoboam.
