After the Natufians discovered grasses such as barley and wheat, they began to build communities to live in permanently. This caused them to form more of a culture and more rituals. One of these includes the Natufian burial. They placed the body of the deceased in a hole that they dug under the hearth. The bodies were often placed in close proximity to their homes. They also placed a riverstone on top of the body. The ceremony linked the death of someone special to their home. Often, the family found treasures to place with the body. They also made elaborate jewelry out of bones, shells, and stone.
