Return to History 8 Near East Questions

The early culture of the Hebrews was a nomadic one, with wandering tribes, organized in classic tribal logic. Their society was organized around a kinship, with a strict hierarchy element. The early Hebrews also believed that their relationship with God was a kinship relationship, and that outsiders who did not share that same bond, or anyone who was not considered to be a direct descendant of Abraham, could not be included in this special relationship. The nomadic part of early Hebrew culture is proven through the movements of Abraham, most of which follow well-known trade routes, proving that they were nomads who often engaged in trade or herding. They had no desire to form civilizations, as they believed that they were associated with Cain and his descendants, and that monarchies directly disobeyed God's will.
