When archaeologists are digging on a site and find artifacts, they form a question in their minds to transform the artifact to evidence. The archaeologists would very much like that question answered; but to do that, they have to make guesses and predictions. They are not always correct, but a lot of the times they are because they are good at what they do. For example, in our book, A Bone From a Dry Sea, the character May Anna is putting together a skull. SHe and the rest of the team are assuming that it is Homo habilis, a two million year old ancestor of humans. However, once she puts together a few more pieces, May Anna realizes that the cranium that she is putting together couldn't be habilis because it is too small, therefore even older than the Homo habilis. Another example is at a current site in Tartaria, Romania, archaeologists have found many relics like pots and jewelry. Near by this site is evidence of a prehistoric settlement. The archaeologists analyzing these artifacts are guessing that these pieces of evidence found in Tartaria are associated with the prehistoric settlement, maybe they were the belongings of the inhabitants in that settlement, just moved around by plates or erosion. Again, they have no proof, they are just making logical guesses.

Here are is a picture of some of the things they just found in Romania:
