History 8 Agriculture Vocabulary Irrigation was utilized by ancient civilizations without a consistent water supply, such as a river. Irrigation channels were generally sourced from a natural spring and led back to an area of farming or the area where the civilization's inhabitants lived. Such complex irrigation in these communities suggest a complex organization of work and possibly a leader supervising. Originally, it was thought that the Egyptians were the first to utilize irrigation farming, but new discoveries suggest that the Ghassoulians were the pioneers two thousand years prior.
