Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest king of ancient Babylon. He came into power in 605 BC after his father, Nabopolassar, died. Nebuchadnezzar was the equal of all the great Mesopotamian conquerors. He prevented Egypt and Syria, major powers, from advancing on his territory and conquered the Phoenicians and the state of Judah. He attacked Jerusalem and its temple and ordered thousands of jews into exile. He deported upper class men and craftspeople which marked the beginning of Jewish Exile. Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylon with great splendor and made it one of the most magnificent cities. Babylon became the most powerful city-state in the region and Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest warrior king. When he died in 562 BC, arts, science, and literature flourished.
