Return to History 8 Near East Vocabulary

The word "decalogue" is an interchangeable definition for the Ten Commandments found in Exodus. The Commandments are found in Exodus 20:1-17. These commandments are to be followed by people with holy books that include Exodus and the Old Testament. The rules are placed for a better relationship with the God these religions worship and for a better life on earth before the afterlife, with rules involving worshiping God and accepting God as the most important God and prohibiting murder and not respecting one's father and mother. The rules also enforce a holy day, the seventh day of the week, to be reserved as a day of rest and worship.
