The Lex talionis of Law of Talion, was a principle developed in early Babylonian law and present in both biblical and early Roman law that criminals should receive as punishment precisely those injuries and damages they had inflicted upon their victims. Historians refer to this law as "an eye for an eye" principle. Hammurabi's code was deeply influenced by this type of punishment, although the severity of the punishment was based on a person's social ranking. But, in Hammurabi's code many punishments were death sentences. In some of the following societies the person who was affected by the "offense" could also demand a certain amount of money as punishment.
